Are Cometic MLS Gaskets legal for use in Monoposto?
Are Cometic MLS Gaskets legal for use in Monoposto?
Are these gaskets legal for use in Monoposto? Can we please get clarification
Re: Are Cometic MLS Gaskets legal for use in Monoposto?
A re-bore allowance in accordance with manufacturers specification up to 0.5mm; together with manufacturers specification replacement pistons. No additional machining to recover original compression ration is required or permitted as a result of this modification only.
Re: Are Cometic MLS Gaskets legal for use in Monoposto?
Cometic gaskets are available in various thicknesses. This can have an effect on compression ratios
I feel this is against the rules

The Monoposto Technical Regulations say:
ALL ENGINES:
5.7.9 Replacement Components: Components of alternative manufacturers may be used to reduce
rebuild costs provided original specification for dimensions, weight and materials are complied with.
Hence whether replacement components, which would include gaskets, comply with the Regulations depends on their specification and on the original specifications for the component that is being replaced. The specific manufacturer of a replacement component, such as a head gasket, doesn't per se determine whether it complies in any particular engine application.
If you have a further specific query on this topic it would be best to direct it to the Monoposto Technical Committee for advice. Their contact details are contained in the Monoposto Yearbook which is issued to Club Members, or I can pass on an enquiry to them. My email address is admin@monoposto.co.uk

Re: Are Cometic MLS Gaskets legal for use in Monoposto?
Cometic are merely a manufacturer, they are not a type of headgasket.
It really depends on the engine as to the legality of MLS headgaskets, as some OEM's specify MLS as standard, I understand that some of the Japanese OEM's started to use them in the late 80's. I know in particular that the later Rover K series engines specify a MLS headgasket.
As for the thickness, there are many manufacturers who produce headgaskets with alternative thicknesses, they are commonly used to drop the compression ratio for boosted engines.
For use in Mono we need to stick to OEM or a direct equivalent, that would include construction and thickness. It is almost certain that Cometic make direct equivalent gaskets to OEM, so to say a Cometic gasket is legal or illegal is oversimplification.
