Should we terminate Mono Free

Post by TFR »

I have of course only recent experience of mono 1000 and 1400,but talking to various members of this class it seems that by the rule change that we invoke in 2010(i.e. standard engines only) we are going to exclude quite a few cars and competitors who are currently running with us on a regular and occasional basis. These competitors who have various tuned parts are reluctant to change the spec of their cars just to satisfy our club (it is again time or money or both). We already have a problem in 1800(exhaust manifolds),we will have a worse one next year in 1000 and 1400 if we proceed. In an ideal world these changes may seem a good idea, but in practical terms and with regard to the current financial situation we are shooting ourselves in the foot, the most important criteria for the club is to encourage as many enties as possible not cut down our options,so I suggest we abandon this rule change, the more laisse-faire we are the more entries we will have.

As i keen on looker and future part of this issue i wish to add my opinion even though i am not competing in it this year!

I see where you are coming from Geoff and think its good to have pointed it out.

My opinion is that the bike engines are far superior to car engines and if some one like me can get an engine absoulutly standard and use it is great , cheap and fair.

if you start allowing mods it comes down to who has most to spend not who is the best with what they have.

in respect to the fact its like what has happened with 1800 i feel there is quite a diffrence.

The biggest problem was the extream lateness off the final rulling with the ehhast manifold three weeks before the season and with no prior discusstion!

im sure if it was said that they needed to be chamged for next season there would of only been a few paddock mutters.

But as you have brought this up now we can all discuss it like it should be done.

from what i can gather most mods can just be removed ie power commanders are as easy to remove as fit!

Im only going on what i belive so dont take it as gospal btu for me it must be better for the club to get people to jusst buy a bike engine and fit it without worrieing about getting £1000 worth of mods to be able to get to the sharpe end!

I look forward to hearing what people say here like who is effected and what do they have to take off and is it viable!

I for one would prefer a level playing field to play on as im sure most of us would!

My feelings on this are that there is little point writing regs unless you have the power to enforce them. This requires scrutineers with the right equipment, dedication, adequate time and the full support of the club.
Tuning of bike engines goes far beyond just fitting a power commander, flowed and ported heads, trick pistons, race cams, knife edged cranks, low output generators, reduced flow oil pumps, close ratio gearboxes and more. You can easily spend in excess of 5K tuning an engine and find another 30HP and greater driveability and if anyone thinks that writing a regulation will prevent this happening you are being naive.
Before any regulations are written you need to work out how you are going to police them.

I do agree with you Ewan it would be ideal if we all had equal cars and equal power as in many series like formula renault etc, etc, but this is not what Mono is all about, we have a large diversity of cars and engines.
Where I am coming from is the continuation of Mono financially in its present form with low entry fees and relatively cheap racing; to achieve this end our biggest priority is to get as many cars out there as possible,(hence my suggestion that we include formula Vee in 1600 if they want to run) we wont do this by closing our doors to cars that are currently running with us.
My point about the 1800 manifolds was to demonstrate how reluctant members are just to make a small change, they will not want to alter the cars they have" honed to perfection" over a few seasons. Many of the mods have very little benefit, but the inventors are very proud of what they think they have achieved, even a grand for a standard engine is £999 more than they want to spend.
I dont have any figures but looking around I would geuss that are entries are down on last year, that means that our entry fees must rise next year, so we need to take action to encourage as many as cars out there as possible. We have run Free and Standard classes sucessfully for a few years now,so why are we changing it in the current financial climate. We have introduced 1400 but as yet it has not resulted in one extra entry,I am not suggesting we abandon that, but we have to "wake up and smell the coffee" if we dont want our costs to rise.It is a vicsous circle, exclude a few, prices rise.
I have to agree with Phil (Anderson, not the Kiwi),it will also be very difficult to police but the main concern has to be the financial stability of the club.
Any other views, this is, after all a democracy, does anybody care?
Just on a personal note I would like to express my support for Douglas McClay who has recently been under fire from certain factions, here is a guy who has done so much for all of us over the years and to whom I believe we all owe a debt of gratitude, thanks Douglas,I know we are a motely crew, but dont give up on us,you ARE appreciated.
