Re: Baking Grand Prix
I'm a bit miffed about this baking grand prix business.
I normally eat about 60% of the cakes that Sara brings and ate at least half of Tony Cottons cheesecake.
And what's happened.
Nobody has asked me to be a judge.
Judges will probably be selected from the slimline lettuce brigade who wouldn't know a decent cake if it fell on them.
Out of spite over this deliberate affront I will know eat 80% of the Sara cakes.
Lower lip trembling.

Re: Baking Grand Prix
Define baking!?!?!
We want to bring two entries (one officially from me, but actually made by my girlfriend Laura), and the other officially from "EC" which should mean Emma as you don't know my mother is called Elizabeth. Ooops.
Anyway, one is a fully legal entry that has been baked. The other doesn't go anywhere near an oven - it is set in the fridge.
Also, as it's a baking competition, can we submit other baked goods? Potatoes? A loaf of bread? Quiche? Beans? Lasagne? Casseroles?
There needs to be a rules clarification by the relevant sub-committee so that disputes are not only settled, but avoided in the first place.
And finally, how sweet a tooth does the judge have?

I have put a collection of cakes together for you to munch your way through my dearest Mr P so you wont have any room to be a judge!!!You are of course the finest judge of a cake this side of the pennines so if you dont mind I'll keep you as my own personal cake tester. I shall not be putting an entry in myself as I'm still lashed to the oven making this weekends rations!! Triston I think a few savorys would be well recieved but make it your self! Sara.xx

Dear all,
Sorry to disturb this "love in" but i thought i should point out that although my name was at the top of the previous message it was in fact sara (and NOT me!) who was declaring her undying love for Mr P - sorry to disappoint you mate!
Tristan - whilst i am quite happy that you can "bake" both potatoes and a quiche, i am less sure about a casserole! I do agree that it is possible to open and even "heat up" a can of "baked" beans, this doesn't however, constitute "baking". I fear that unless you can prove that you did the actual baking yourself, you may fall foul of the scrutin....i mean judge!
Kindest regards to all

Re: Baking Grand Prix
I'm having a go at meringues.
There really ought to be strict classes. I wouldn't wish to share a class with a heavy fruit cake, for example, as if it hit a meringue there could be severe damage. Also, if you can buy a new car for 1000/1400 you ought to be able to have a class where you get a cake from Waitrose or Marks and put it on a plate yourself.
Is it worth having a go at apple pie? I've got some windfalls in the garden. Would that fit into the approved spectrum?

Re: Baking Grand Prix
To clarify the entry does not have to be baked in an oven, though it should be a cake or a dessert of some kind. no shop bought entries please!!!!! apple pie or meringues are both fine and sounds lovely. Sara you have to put in an entry otherwise there is nothing to aspire to. you can enter 'rations' and then we can save it for monday minum the judges sample, no need to make an extra cake! Dave i will talk to the panel about having a third judge, though i can confirm that there are no lettuces eatter. Geoff says you are all half baked lol

Done some basic flapjacks too - full of butter and sugar but there's oats in them too so I suppose that makes up for it. Like running a V8 Chevy on bio fuel.

Well a meringues is of a composite construction. A bit like his car. A 8v VJ is a Lardy cake in comparison.phuston wrote:Meringues

Re: Baking Grand Prix
According to the results posted on Startline, Elizabeth (mum) wants to know since when 9 + 9 = 17?

Re: the results.
Tony Cotton's Meringues were delicious when they finally appeared on Monday.
Surely they merited a DNS!

Re: Baking Grand Prix
I'm a competitive chap, and as I can't win sod all on the track at the moment, I'm going to put all of my efforts into sorting the baking result out.andrewcliffe wrote:According to the results posted on Startline, Elizabeth (mum) wants to know since when 9 + 9 = 17?
I'm guessing it's a simple typo, but we need to know!!!
Hopefully see you at Oulton, although last night I was going to call it a day for this year - the gearbox internals aren't pleasant. All the gears have at least one tooth missing, 2nd is merely a pile of bits in the oil, and 1st is just a slightly lumpy shaft... Hindsight: Should have pitted and retired.
