Although in club racing you'll probably get away with changing one dog ring every other season. Anything more means you're doing it wrong. A ratio pair will on average last 4 or 5 years or more, unless you change gear badly in which case you can damage them quite quickly. Much cheaper (and faster) to learn how to change gear.
Torque the big castle nuts. Without a torque wrench you will undertighten (allowing some relative movement between components) or overtighten (causing damage to threads at the very least).
Statistically, more accidents happen because of overtightening. Especially when a nut/bolt check involves stupidly tightening a nut by 1/10th of a turn each time "to make sure".

Here,s one for Kevan, no doubt will produce suitable rude response.
I bought a box of mk9 series 5 gears from a f3 team in 1988, most are still going strong and not showing any signs of cracking at the base of the teeth, where they tend to go before breaking.
In fact one of the few failures i have had over the years was a brand new second gear bought from a hewland agent

Some of the comments refer to gear changes. The above is William Hewland's take on it.
BTW if you need to use the clutch to change up something's wrong.

And if you need the clutch on downshifts (in a Dallara), something's wrong.

Only ever had one ratio broke in 7 1/2 seasons racing. Never changed a dog ring. Obviously not trying hard enough

I did it
No problem but one ratio broken and a dog ring had signs of wear
Makes me think I better tjek the gearbox all over.
