Hi,just a quick question about what size socket people use on there single seater.Im running van diemen with a redtop 15 batt.What is the common size to use,50amps or 175 amp socket.thanks.

You'll find both used.....& both will work... but the bigger ones are easier to connect to decent sized battery cables & perhaps tend to give less aggravation

You'll find that when you really need to borrow a slave battery, because yours has been nicked, or you've forgotten it, or it has suddenly decided not to hold a charge, that everyone will be using the other type to you.

The Reynard had a larger 175A connector on it, so our wheeled jump battery has a large one. All the Dallaras have had 50A ones, so we have a converter on the wheeled battery - so that can do BOTH!!! The non-wheeled versions (I must get round to making a trolley for them, as my pitcrew deserve better than carrying heavy things) only have small 50A connectors. And then we start playing with cars that had grey 50A connectors, but they came off straight away and got red ones instead.

My limited spying on cars suggests that most things pre-1994 seem to have larger connectors, and most later things have smaller ones. Probably best to fit whatever the rest of your class has, because you'll be wanted their jump starters one day.

The grey 50 amp plugs seem to take longer to break up if you use brake cleaner and other solvents near them!

I have moved over to the larger sockets the smaller ones break much easier. I got feed up with replacing them when pulled at an angle when being unplugged by mechanics (ie my dad, wife or mate) or stood on. The cases on the larger one tend to take more abuse plus the handle is much better.

The greys and red plugs are keyed differently so will not mix. Unless you file away the key.
I agree with tristan. Go for the 175a

Greys and reds not mixing......sounds like scuirrels.

There are yellow anderson plugs as well!

And blue, and green, and...

....and Anderson shelters as well.....but you'll be too young to remember them!
