Allan Staniforth

Post by RedRedWine »

Many members will have heard the sad news that following a short illness Allan Staniforth passed away on Saturday morning, 2 May.

Allan was well known as the designer/constructor of the Terrapin racing car, author of many books on racing car design and development ("High Speed, Low Cost" and "Race and Rally Car Source Book" to name but 2), a prolific writer in the technical press and a talented driver. Indeed, he was at Harewood test day only 4 weeks before his death, so driving up to the last. He was also the inspiration that led Gould cars to become the dominant ones in hillclimbing.

As well as competing in our championship in the mid 1960's, he spoke to members on technical topics at our seminars, and was a good friend to many of us.

Sympathy to his wife Trish, son Darryll, daughter Clare and their families.

Very sad news. I kept meaning to get in touch with him and asking him searching questions about suspension design, but I never got round to it. It would seem I've missed my chance.

However, his passing will mean that the likes of Ray Dackombe, Alan Everitt and so on will have even better cars to play with at the big race track in the sky. I'm sure they'll enjoy his arrival as much as we mourn his departing.

I extend my sympathies to all those who knew him or were close to him.
