Re: Does changing tyre width change wheel rate?
Hi, Something you may also have to consider is aero drag. Wider wheels will have a greater surface area and may have an effect on any aero devices close to them. I have seen some impirical evidence of top speeds being reduced a tiny amount by wider wheels. Interestingly enough, Tyrrell F1 once ran s...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Continuing on the thread of warming the engine...... I have tried running the engine up to temperature without any form of external heater. I have a ff2000 legal DAMICO built pinto engine in a FF2000 Van Diemen. The engine builder recommends a Millers 20/60 oil for the engine. This is not available ...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Here is what I have discovered with 12V heaters. A 12V 200 watt heater takes about 30 mins to warm oil from 10 degrees to 50 degrees. This draws about 8 amps. In practical terms this takes the chill off and allows the oil to reach the engine in a slightly warmer than ambient temperature. The down si...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Just thought I would mention my plan to use a little 12v heater for the oil tank. ( When it arrives.) The operation for this would be as follows. Open filler lid, put the heating element into the oil in the tank. (It is about the size of a small bread knife. Battery connections would be with crocodi...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Well, If you remember my initial question was do you have any experience of these? What a brilliant debate! My personal opinion would be to have the engine oil maintained within a range where it was the giving the best lubrication properties without getting too hot. I must confess my own application...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Hi Dermot, I have tried to spin my ff2000 spec engine over cold. It is VERY tight. Once warm there is a marked difference in the ease of cranking! I have found a 12V 200 watt heater that will easily drop into the oil tank. Good old ebay. There is also an Engine Block Heater for 99 quid. I have order...

Re: Engine pre-heaters
Hi, I have done a little bit of research on this already. A cheap 240v coffee cup heater is rated at 500 watts. I bought one to see how fast it heats water. The answer is it takes two minutes to put 50 Degrees celcius into one litre of water. A domestic water heating element is rated at 3000 watts. ...
