Trailer Tests

Post by willcox1998 »

Has anyone had the experience of having to do a trailer test?
I am in the process of getting mine done. what did it consist of? Is it easy?

I had a compact course at £500-600 all in, and they were really good, made sure we had plenty of space for practicing. The trailer was rigged with markers for reversing. If your already good at these then there is nothing to worry about. The test is a little different as your expected to treat the trailer as a fully loaded trailer. So don't do your usual speeds! my mate failed his test for that reason.

When I did mine, it was for <3500kg trailers.
The "training" and test were done with a hatchback and a garden trailer (arguably more difficult as they are short and respond quickly).

The test consisted of attaching the trailer properly.
Driving forwards (ensuring you don't clip the inside of the trailer on tighter turns)
Reversing around some cones and into a space.
Disconnecting the trailer.

It was pretty easy.

Thank you both,

Its all very confusing now, as the trailer you use for the test has to be of an rigid enclosed body (excludes our trailer as it has a canvas cover) and contain 600kg of loads which must be either bagged aggregates or water! A race car doesn't meet this!

I have contacted a company who do a course based on an assesement drive and the test is on the last day of training.

The joys of being young! :D

I'm slightly older so I can drive all sorts of things with absolutely no training or assumption of competency whatsoever.
