Mounting for a GoPro Camera

Post by omsracer »

I received a GoPro camera for Christmas and want to get a secure mount for my Reynard. Those of you who have already used them can you recommend a secure and acceptable mounting.

Many thanks

I can't really recommend a suitable one for your car as I just used the ones supplied with the camera, but whatever you do get a tether for it too. The GoPro cases can break at the mounts. I was lucky a Marshall saw mine fly off and returned it to me.

We used our 3D printer to make a mounting that fitted onto the roll hoop, from which the camera can be mounted. Depending on which version of GoPro you have, the polycarbonate case it the weak link - the lugs that connect to the next section of mount often break off. A secondary tether is a very good idea otherwise you run the risk of losing the camera. Putting a label inside with name on is a good idea as well!

i found attaching it via the the casing foot always causes the case to break due to vibration no matter how the foot is mounted to the car. i think every car at our club has a broken case....

in the end after breaking two cases i found a good solution by attaching the rear door to a flat ally plate using 3m double sided tape (very strong) then attaching the plate to the car roll over hoop using cable ties and or ductape.

the rear door being a large area and a shorter fulcrum means no cracks.

hard to describe so knocked up a drawing that might help.

camera case can still be opened i just leave it attached to the ally plate all the time.

for added security i put a cable tie through the orignal case mount hole and attach that cable tie to the roll hoop - but its overkill that 3m tape is damn strong

Ive put them on my car, Marc F's car Dax W's car and Ewens borrowed dream machine. Never had one fall off. Two methods, standard sticky mount with a rivet through it to a repair washer the other side or as I have the last couple of cars one of these:

With a bolt screwed through it from the back with a penny washer.

For a lanyard I use lock wire from he centre of the back of the hinge to an additional mount hole nearby or through a tiny 2mm hole and then lock wired to a small keyring the other side so it won't pull through.

My method does mean you can still use extender arms and position the camera with some adjustment of angle and view.

There is some footage from last weekend as an example:

Keep well.
